Update

Big news for all organisations who hold (or are planning to obtain) ISO 9001 certification: a new version of the ISO 9001 standard may be coming soon.

ISO/TC 176/SC 2, the ISO Subcommittee for Quality Systems, recently held a ballot on whether to proceed with an early revision of the ISO 9001 standard. When asked to choose between starting a revision with immediate effect or leaving the standard in its current form until the next scheduled review in 2026, the committee voted to start a revision now.

This means that the current version of the standard, ISO 9001:2015, may not be the current version for much longer.

I'm ISO 9001 certified. What does this news mean for me?

Don't panic - you don't have to do anything right now. The ISO 9001:2015 revision has only just been given the green light, so it will be a while before any action is required on your part.

When the new version of the ISO 9001 standard is unveiled, it's likely that certified organisations will have a few years to transition before the current version (ISO 9001:2015) actually expires.

This was the case last time around. When ISO 9001:2015 was introduced in September 2015, certified companies were given a three-year grace period to transition from ISO 9001:2008 (the previous version of the standard) to ISO 9001:2015.
