UK-US relations

At 11pm on 31 December 2020, the Brexit transition period ended and the UK officially completed its departure from the European Union.

It remains to be seen what opportunities and challenges this new era will bring our way, but here's one fairly safe prediction: now that Britain has distanced itself from the European single market, a closer trading relationship with the USA is all but guaranteed.

The UK and the USA have been firm allies for many years (much has been made of the 'special relationship' between the two countries), and while a new UK-US trade deal has yet to be agreed upon, British businesses should be prepared to work more closely with our friends on the other side of the Atlantic.

Brexit seems to have been on everyone's minds for as long as we can remember, but it looks like things are finally coming to a head. At the beginning of January, MPs gave their backing for a withdrawal agreement bill that will see the UK leave the EU on January 31st. So, with this in mind, many UK businesses are starting to consider their relationship with the US.

The relationship between the UK and the USA has always been one of mutual support, but once Brexit is over with, we can expect this to strengthen even more. US president, Donald Trump is said to be "excited" about the closer post-Brexit relations that are likely to develop over the coming months. Meanwhile, our own Prime Minister is prioritising a trade deal with the US and plans to get this underway as soon as possible.

At this point, there's no doubt that British and American businesses need to start evolving and creating closer ties. We may find we have an influx of US customers looking for British products and services and vice versa. So, how can you prepare your business?

UK and USA flags

As the UK prepares for its departure from the European Union on 31 October 2019, many British businesses are turning their attention to the USA.

British and American people alike have long enjoyed the mutual benefits of their countries' close rapport, and that so-called 'special relationship' will only become more important once the UK has left the EU. Indeed, President Trump has stated that talks about a "very substantial" UK-US trade deal are already underway.

So how can UK business owners take advantage of the current situation?
